Who are we?

CAMHS Phoenix School provides education for patients aged 11-18 years who have been admitted to CAMHS Phoenix Unit at Wokingham Hospital. Admission to our school is by NHS referral only.
We work alongside our CAMHS colleagues and education is seen as an integral part of a patient’s recovery.

The ‘outstanding’ (Ofsted) education team comprises three core subject specialist teachers and a teaching assistant, who support all patients attending the hospital’s classrooms. We provide a welcoming and positive learning environment and a broad curriculum that empowers the individual to rediscover the joy of learning. We liaise closely with home schools in order that the patients’ hospital stays do not have a negative impact upon their learning. We have a high teacher: pupil ratio and a maximum group size of 12.
The CAMHS Phoenix Unit is a Tier 4 NHS psychiatric hospital service for patients who are experiencing a variety of severe mental health illnesses, which can include anxiety, depression, stressful relationships and other specific mental health problems. The average admission lasts for 12 weeks.

Admissions are wholly based on the medical needs of the patient. Referrals are received directly from professionals within the locality Child & Adolescent Mental Health teams (CAMHS). Each young person has an individual medical care plan which incorporates their educational package.

CAMHS Phoenix Unit is open between 8am and 6pm and lessons are between 9.30am and 2.50pm. We are open during Wokingham Borough Council term times. We can also offer remote education when a young person admitted to the unit is unable to attend.
